MANILA, Philippines -- The testimony of a little girl led investigators to a suspect in the bloody Rizal Banking Commercial Corp. (RCBC) heist last May 16 in Cabuyao, Laguna.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Director Geary Barias told reporters in Camp Crame Friday morning that the little girl, already in police custody, positively identified Ricardo Gomolon as one of the bank robbers.

Gomolon was arrested last Saturday near his residence in Consular Street Barangay 31, Southside, Fort Bonifacio.

He was a member of the Philippine Army’s Engineering Battalion and now works as a Bantay Bayan volunteer in Marikina City.

The witness, Barias said, saw the suspect alight from a vehicle used by the robbers and was one of the first to enter the bank.

Superintendent Ferdinand Ampil, chief of the NCRPO Regional Intelligence Operations Unit, said an informant tipped them off on the involvement of Gomolon in the heist.

Ampil said they conducted a two-day surveillance operation on the suspect, even following him to a commissary in the JUSMAG compound inside Fort Bonifacio in Makati City, where Gomolon was said to be shopping with large bundles of money.

Last Saturday morning, Ampil’s men were conducting surveillance on Gomolon when they saw the suspect on a bicycle with a gun tucked in his waist. The suspect was immediately frisked and arrested, and a.38 caliber pistol taken from him.

He was later brought to the Laguna provincial police command where the nine-year old witness positively identified the suspect.

“A little girl will not lie and invent a story,” Barias said when asked how sure police are of the testimony of a child.
Charges of illegal possession of firearms have been filed against the suspect.

Ampil said they are gathering more evidence to pin down Gomolon to the May 16 heist, including a comparison of his fingerprint with those taken from the crime scene and a check of the serial number of any money bills in the suspect’s possession with those from the bank.

Ten people were killed during the robbery, all of them shot in the head, and P12 million taken by the robbers.
