Cebu City mayor mulls ECQ extension up to May 30
« on: April 25, 2020, 05:53:26 PM »
CEBU CITY – Due to the rising number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases here, Mayor Edgardo Labella on Wednesday said he is considering extending the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) up to May 30.

Labella’s executive order (EO) No. 64 imposing city-wide ECQ became effective on March 28 and will end on April 28.

At first, Labella said the extension would be up to May 15, but he now wants it changed to May 30.

He said it is better to keep the quarantine status in the city in consonance with the ECQ in Metro Manila.

“As the need arises, if and when the data on Covid-19 cases in Cebu City would plateau or decrease significantly, we can just immediately lift it,” Labella said in Cebuano during a press conference at the Cebu City Hall.

The mayor said he is yet to sign an EO imposing another month-long lockdown in the city.

His pronouncement came after the Cebu City Health Department (CCHD) reported a sudden spike of Covid-19 cases from 173 on Tuesday to 312 on Wednesday noon.

Of the number, 123 cases are from the Cebu City Jail.

Previously, the Cebu City Jail recorded only four cases. Two of them are jail guards who are now under quarantine confinement, while the other two are inmates from Barangay Duljo-Fatima and Carreta, one of whom died.

Nine confirmed cases were reported in Barangay Labangon, three in Barangay Luz which is under an enforced lockdown, and one each in C. Padilla, Kasambagan and Inayawan villages and from the Cebu City Health Office.

Labangon has imposed its own lockdown.

“Lockdown in Labangon has been authorized by the Office of the President, with condition that they will comply with the protocols of the DOH (Department of Health),” Labella said.

Some residents of Sitio Zapatera where many cases were reported, were pulled out from their homes and placed in an isolation facility at the nearby Bo. Luz National High School. Others who live in bigger houses preferred to undergo home quarantine.

Labella ordered a two-day massive disinfection of the city’s Pasil Fishport in Barangay Suba where one confirmed case of Covid-19 was detected on Monday.

Meanwhile, he commended the barangay captains of 80 villages in the city for establishing their own isolation centers. (PNA)
