Cebu City Hall gets bomb threat
« on: April 29, 2020, 10:08:18 PM »
CEBU CITY, Aug.10 -- Cebu City Hall received a bomb threat through text message on Thursday, disrupting official business in the executive and legislative buildings and nearby private establishments here.

The threat also alarmed some of the churchgoers in Basilica del Sto. Niño de Cebu, located in front of City Hall.

City Councilor Dave Tumulak, deputy mayor for peace and order, immediately ordered the evacuation of employees and civilians out of city hall for safety, and called up the police who  searched the buildings for bombs or any explosive device.

The Special Weapons and Tactic Team and Bomb Squad declared the area cleared and business at City Hall went back to normal around 1:00 p.m.

The text message was received by Tumulak and some City Hall employees before 11:00 a.m.

The threat, sent by cellphone no. +639391349105, in the Cebuano vernacular said: “At exactly 11:30 a.m., a bomb will explode in City Hall, La Nueva (Supermarket), and Sto. Niño (Church). All of you are incompetent.”

Acting Mayor Edgardo Labella said he found it improbable for a person to smuggle a bomb inside City Hall as visitors were thoroughly checked by strict security personnel prior to entering the premises.

However, he still ordered the CSU personnel and blue guards to tighten security at City Hall.

Vice Mayor Labella was designated acting mayor as Mayor Tomas Osmeña left for Japan on Wednesday for a personal trip. (PNA)
