CDO cops seize sacks of ammo from Chinese national
« on: April 30, 2020, 04:05:19 PM »
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Augusy 11 — Authorities are now looking into the possibility that the live and spent ammunition seized from a Chinese national inside a warehouse here could have links to gunrunning activities of syndicates operating in Mindanao, a police official said Friday (August 11).
Chief Inspector Ariel Philip Pontillas, head of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s Intelligence Branch, said they arrested a certain Jay Tan, who was caught in possession of various live and used bullets on Thursday night.
Pontillas said police raided the warehouse where the ammunition stash was located without resistance from Tan, a Chinese national, by virtue of a court-issued search warrant.
Seized were live rounds of 7.62mm, .50 caliber, 5.56mm, including two sacks containing spent .50 caliber and 40mm shells.
Pontillas said the ammunition arrived from Iligan City about a month ago and were brought by men on board a black pick-up truck believed to be locals of Marawi City.
This matched the tip police received that the men working in the warehouse were Marawi residents.
“Aside from the ammunition, we also received information that firearms were brought here from Iligan and Marawi and were intended for Davao City and other areas in the Davao region,” Pontillas told reporters.
Part of the their investigation, he said, is to determine Tan's possible connection to the transport of some 8,000 rounds of live bullets that were intercepted by police here last June.
Tan could be involved with a big-time gunrunning syndicate in Northern Mindanao, the police official added.
“There will be more raids in the coming days,” Pontillas said, adding that authorities are now scouring other storage facilities that could be used to hoard illegal firearms and ammunition.
Pontillas said the suspect has denied any knowledge of the seized items from his own premises.
Tan is now detained at the city police office detention area and will be facing charges for illegal possession of ammunition. (PNA/Jigger J. Jerusalem)
