CDO beefs up security for annual festival
« on: May 02, 2020, 12:14:19 AM »
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) vowed it can handle all the security concerns for the month-long feast of the annual "Higalaay Festival 2017."

Police Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa II, Cocpo spokesperson, said no terror threat is, so far, imminent in the city during the entire festivities despite the months-long siege in nearby Marawi City.

There is no need for any reinforcement from the Police Regional Office 10 (PRO-10), Hortillosa said, in contrast to last year's festival which required security augmentation from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB).

Hortillosa added that trainees from the Regional Training School (RTS) might act as security augmentation force as part of their training.

An addition to this year's security preparation, the police official said, is the engagement of various civilian organizations whose members will act as undercover agents in crowded areas.

The local police's intelligence capabilities, meanwhile, are being enhanced, he added.

“There are lots of civic groups who have volunteered. They will be deployed specifically to be vigilant about suspicious persons and objects,” Hortillosa said.

On top of this, the battalion-size Task Force Oro is also mobilizing its soldiers to guard places of celebrations.

Other security measures in crowded events such as the annual civic-military float parade include the ban of backpacks, bull caps and camera drones within a considerable radius at the event site. (PNA/Mark D. Francisco)
