ILOILO CITY -- The camp-based rehabilitation program of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO6) has already served 552 drug surrenderers from Iloilo City.

The ninth batch is composed of 96 persons who received their certificates of completion in a ceremony here Wednesday.

The recovery and wellness program was launched to support President Rodrigo Duterte's all-out war against hard drugs.

In his speech, Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, PRO 6 chief directorial staff (CDS), said the program helped drug surrenderers change for good.

Canieso advised the graduates to never go back to the use of hard drugs and instead become “active partners of the community in nation building.”

He assured that the rehabilitation program of the PRO-6 will continue to “save” more drug dependents.

Meanwhile, Senior Supt. Henry Biñas, newly-installed chief of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), thanked the training staff and personnel who facilitated the rehabilitation program of the graduates.

One of the drug surrenderers, who graduated on Wednesday, is Jay-R who recalled that he started to skip his classes during his elementary years and joined a group who is into different vices and hard drugs. It got worse and eventually he stopped and did not finish high school.

He said the rehabilitation program was able to help him change for the better.

He added that he is now doing everything to pass the Alternative Learning System (ALS) examination, finish his studies and reach his dreams.

Jay-R thanked the city government, the PRO-6 and their mentors in the rehabilitation program for helping them.

Another surrenderer named Michael, meanwhile, expressed gladness for the opportunity to change through the program. He started to use hard drugs when he was in high school. From then on, his life became miserable and he did not know what to do.

“I will always be grateful for this opportunity given to me. I have changed now and I will maintain this so I will have a good life and a good relationship with my family,” he said.

PRO-6 spokesperson, Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, said that graduates of the rehabilitation program will undergo aftercare program to be managed by the Social Services Agency which is headed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Western Visayas.

He said that they will continue the rehabilitation program to cater to more surrenderers.

Enrollment for the tenth batch will start September 7.

“We encourage drug surrenderers who are not enrolled in any outpatient drug rehab program to avail the unique practice,” he said. (PNA)
