The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) clarified that the 5.6 magnitude quake that recently hit Valencia City and Maramag in Bukidnon and neighboring cities and provinces, was caused by the movement of the tectonic plate, said Phivolcs Northern Mindanao Director Marcial Labinay.
Appearing in a session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Tuesday, Labinay said the tectonic plate has its origin between the upland barangays of Guinoyoran and Lourdes of Valencia City.
The quake was not related to volcanic activity, said Labinay who added that the epicenter of the quake had a shallow depth.
Labinay said last year's intensity 5.5 quake that hit Valencia and nearby areas is believed to have been triggered by the same fault line, and not by the Central Mindanao fault, Cabanglasan fault or Tagoloan fault.
Mt. Kalayo known as Musuan peak of Maramag and Mt. Kalatungan of Bukidnon are active volcanoes but have no registered volcanic activity, he said. - by PNA
