Two environmentalists and another person are facing charges of malicious mischief for uprooting crops believed to be genetically modified (GM) at a University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) field trial site in Bay, Laguna.
Daniel Ocampo and Indian Ali Abbas, both members of Greenpeace, and Ricky Morales, who was identified by police as a CNN reporter, were among at least 20 people who stormed the 1,000-square meter test site of the UPLB Institute of Plant Breeding on Thursday, according to Inspector Joseph Laureta, Bay police chief.
Ocampo, a campaigner of Greenpeace’s Sustainable Agriculture, said by phone on Sunday that the group’s action aimed to prevent the contamination of non-GM crops planted together with the experimental Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) eggplants that were already flowering.
He said the team had dug up “three to four rows†of Bt and non-Bt eggplants before the university guards stopped them.
