Boracay to join International Coastal Cleanup
« on: May 05, 2020, 03:59:06 PM »
BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- Thousands of volunteers will spend the morning of September 16 removing trash from the shores of this resort island.

The activity is in line with the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICC) celebration observed in various areas of the country and in over 100 countries.

The Saturday’s event here will be spearheaded by the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) Squadron 609 in partnership with the local government unit of Malay and Boracay Foundation Inc.

Volunteers can select from among different areas including the four-kilometer White Beach, Tambisaan, Bulabog, Diniwid, Puka, as well as on the island’s mangrove area.

“The activity is aimed to help educate the younger generation about keeping Boracay clean and to encourage everyone to volunteer,” the PCGA, the event's organizer, said in a press statement.

Last year, the activity had more than 3,000 participants and collected over 350 bags of trash with an estimated weight of 3,000 kilos.

The organizer is optimistic that more volunteers will be joining this year’s coastal clean-up activity.

The ICC is a global cleanup effort started by the Ocean Conservancy, an environmental advocacy group based in the United States, and considered as the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. (PNA)
