Boracay illuminates ASEAN landmark

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Aug. 9 -- A six-foot tall fiberglass lantern serving as an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) landmark was switched on Tuesday night here.

Officials of the local government unit of Malay, volunteers and liaison officers during the ASEAN meetings held here led the lighting ceremony at Balabag Plaza at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The officials wore white during the lighting ceremony.

The landmark lighting ceremony was held simultaneously in other sites across the country in celebration of the 50th year of the ASEAN. The Philippines is the Chair of ASEAN for 2017 with the theme  “Partnering for Change, Engaging The World.”

Meanwhile, the local lighting ceremony spearheaded by the Malay Municipal Tourism Office opened with a cultural show showcasing talented Malaynons and fire dancing performance.

Rowen Aguirre, executive assistant of LGU-Malay who serves as the ASEAN focal person here , acknowledged those who volunteered  during the meetings held in this island.

Boracay hosted two ASEAN meetings including the 23rd meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) from February 13 to 15 and the Foreign Ministers Retreat from February 19 to 21.

To be chosen as one site for such serious international events, Aguirre said hosting ASEAN is an achievement for Boracay. “We are privilege to host this international event,” he said.

Malay Mayor Ceciron Cawaling, meanwhile, encouraged the audience composed of local officials, representatives from the business sector, among others to work together for Boracay and Malay in general.

The activity was likewise attended by local chief executives from other Aklan towns.

The lantern, with incandescent bulbs, featuring the ASEAN logo and colors, anahaw leaves, and sampaguita flowers will be mounted until November. (PNA)
