Army bomb experts defused the other day an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by unidentified suspects near a public school in Carmen, North Cotabato.
Senior Inspector Miraluna Ortega, chief of Carmen’s municipal police, said it was fortunate that the IED was found by patrolling policemen before it exploded.
Miraluna said the IED was made of about a kilo of highly combustible ammonium nitrate mixed with incendiary chemicals and packed with about a kilo of jagged metal fragments and concrete nails.
Miraluna said the IED, placed inside a jute sack, was rigged with a battery-operated blasting mechanism attached to a mobile phone.
