Bato declared ‘son of Cordillera’

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet -- Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa on Friday thanked his “kailians” (region mates) for honoring him as an adopted “son of Cordillera” for leading the country’s anti-drug campaign.

Dela Rosa, in his message, said his adoption is proof of the region’s continuing support to the Duterte administration’s anti-drug drive which in turn shows the trust the Cordillera people give to his leadership in the Philippine National Police.

He lauded the region for having five of its six provinces declared drug-cleared.

Only Baguio City and the province of Benguet have yet to be declared drug-cleared. Baguio City was able to cut the number of drug affected barangays to only six out of the 128 barangays.

Dela Rosa’s statement came after the traditional ceremony formally declaring him as “son of Cordillera”.

The Regional Development Council (RDC) followed a set of guidelines and criteria for the “adoption”, which Dela Rosa was able to meet.

The RDC during its third quarter meeting on September 7 recommended his “adoption”. It went through a deliberation which was confirmed during the RDC Executive Committee meeting on September 28 where they spelled out the contribution of the PNP chief to the region through the Cordillera Police Regional Office.

His adoption is covered by RDC-Execom Resolution 14, Series of 2014 titled “Approving the adoption of Police Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. Dela Rosa as ‘son of the Cordillera’.”

Dela Rosa’s adoption was based on the numerous accomplishments of the Cordillera PNP, under the leadership of Dela Rosa, among which is the region’s improved drug situation - a significant decrease in the number of drug-affected barangays from 69 percent to 2 percent surpassing its target.

During the ceremony, Dela Rosa was assisted by Benguet Governor Cresencio Pacalso in wearing the G-string, representing the native attire of the male Cordilleran. He was also made to wear a head gear, worn by warrior Cordillerans, while his wife Nancy wore a native handwoven “tapis”.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, also the RDC chairman, rendered an “Uggayam”, a native prayer delivered through singing, asking protection for Dela Rosa in the performance of his duties.

A ritual called “Owik” was performed at the grounds of Camp Dangwa, where the “Mambunong” (native priest) offered meat of a black pig to the gods asking for guidance, not just for the PNP chief but to the country and the people in the region.

A “tayao” Benguet dance was performed by Dela Rosa and his spouse, together with Pacalso, to celebrate of the adoption of “Mulingan” a Kankanaey (South-Central Cordilleran language) word meaning “big hard rock” in the list of Cordillerans who are worthy of emulation. (PNA)
