Baguio trade school bakes bread for front-liners

BAGUIO CITY – Around 900 nutri-buns and 100 carrot loaves were distributed to front-liners here on Wednesday courtesy of the Baguio City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT), which is under the supervision of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Arlene Cadalig, BCSAT vocational school administrator, said the nutria-bun production is one of the center’s support to the city government to produce nutrient-packed food for front-liners and undernourished children.

She said baking will be done twice a week.

Cadalig said 400 nutri-buns will be given to the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC). They will also receive carrots loaves. The other supplies will be given at the checkpoints for the policemen to share.

Cadalig said they will also give the breads to City General Services Office, villages and other volunteer front line service providers.

“We rotate our recipients so that we can give to others,” she said.

Last week, the BCSAT distributed 240 pieces of muffins, 155 cookies and 17 pieces of pizza to the City Social Welfare and Development Office’s (CSWDO) food operation center at PFVR Gymnasium adjacent to the BCSAT and policemen at the checkpoints.

Earlier, TESDA Director General Isidro Lapena directed TESDA regional offices and tech-voc institutions to come up with programs in aid to the government’s effort to combat the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Aside from nutria-buns, Cadalig said they also baked carrot loaves due to the abundant supply of carrots in the locality. They have also made pan de coco as another option.

She said they started the baking on April 6 and hope to continue until mid-May.

While contributing to the whole of a government effort to combat Covid-19, Cadalig said the initiative is also able to provide additional skills to their staff who are not bakers.

“We are doing this initiative as training cum production of the other staff,” Cadalig said.

Aside from producing baked products, BCSAT also opened its door to the front-liners of the CSWDO, allowing the use of their hostel laboratory as a temporary shelter of the workers who live in neighboring towns.

The hostel, which can accommodate eight to 10 persons, can take in five who are expected to observe physical distancing protocol. (PNA)
