THE COURT OF TAX APPEALS HAS ORDERED the arrest of singer Claire de la Fuente for her bus company’s failure to pay P417.8 million in taxes .
The CTA was acting on a case filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, which hailed the issuance of the arrest warrant as as a good sign for its “reinvigorated†Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) campaign.
In a resolution dated March 10, the CTA said that after going over the documents of state prosecutors and finding that the filing of the case “bears the written approval of then Revenue Commissioner Jose Mario C. Buñag,†it found probable cause for the issuance of a warrant of arrest against De la Fuente. The CTA set a bail of P20,000 for the singer.
De la Fuente declined to give any comment because the case is pending in court. The singer, whose real name is Clarita de Guzman, is vice president and treasurer of the Philippine Corinthian Liner Corp. which operates 237 buses plying the Alabang-Baclaran-Monumento route.
Deputy Revenue Commissioner Gregorio V. Cabantac said the case filed against the singer is part of their intensified campaign against tax evaders in line with the agency’s Enhanced RATE Program. The BIR relaunched the program earlier this week as part of efforts to meet the 2010 collection target of P830 billion.
