SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique  -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Western Visayas on Thursday turned over  PHP7 million worth of projects and  equipment to fisherfolks here.

BFAR Regional Director Remia  Aparri said these projects will help the livelihood of  fisherfolks in the province.

Antique, which is considered a tuna highway and top producer of seaweeds in Region 6, is being given interventions so it can graduate from being one of the poorest provinces in the country, she said.

Mayor Elmer Untaran of San Jose de Buenavista said the projects from the national government will ensure that even the small fisherfolks will not be left behind by developments in the country.

Turned over were 15 units of 30-footer fiberglass reinforced plastic patrol boats to all 15 coastal towns of the province; 20 units post-harvest kits to beneficiaries from Bugasong town;  230 units seaweed farm implements for the towns of Culasi, Pandan and Libertad; 10 units shallow water payao for fisherfolk associations in San Jose de Buenavista and Bugasong; and two units rainwater harvester for Roquenians Fisherfolk Association of Anini-y town.

Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao, Vice Governor Edgar Denosta and mayors of the recipient towns were present during the turnover rites. (PNA)
