Taiwan -- Kaohsiung City police have detained an American and his Filipino girlfriend for questioning in connection with the death of cram school teacher broker, Chiu Mei-yun, whose body was found inside a large garbage bag on Saturday.
An official from the American Institute in Taiwan was present at the police station where the suspects were questioned.
Police found traces of blood in the suspects' shared residence as well as dog fur similar to that found on the duct tape used to seal the bag. Investigators announced that DNA tests conducted on the blood stains revealed a positive match with the victim.
Police identified the American suspect only as David, who had called the victim on her cell phone the night she was last seen. According to local TV reports, the American suspect was a cram school instructor and a possible client of the victim.
Police originally targeted a Japanese-national teacher whose motorcycle was caught on surveillance video towing a pull cart loaded with a large sack. The Japanese instructor later told police that she had lent the scooter to the American suspect prior to the incident. The Asian female caught on tape turned out to be the American suspect's Filipino girlfriend. Police apprehended the two suspects Monday night at a tutorial center in Kaohsiung.
