Albay village officials back barangay polls postponement

LEGAZPI CITY -- Majority of village officials in Albay favor the postponement of this year’s barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to May next year, according to Joseph Philip Lee, president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in Albay.

In a phone interview, Lee said the postponement would be an opportunity for all incumbent barangay officials to continue rendering services they have promised to their constituents.

Lee, chairman of Barangay Oro Site in this city, leads some 720 barangay captains across the province.

“The three years given to us by our constituents is too short a period to implement and accomplish projects that would improve the lives especially the marginalized," Lee said.

“This is the right time and chance to make it up with their constituents,” he added.

Likewise, he said the postponement of the barangay election would give village officials ample time to carry out new and ongoing projects that needs to be addressed.

Lee revealed that some 72 or 10 percent of ABC village chiefs oppose the postponement of polls, citing reasons including poor health, family, and work-related matters.

Among the projects cited are: the clearing and assessment of illegal drug personalities in their respective villages; the upcoming barangay General Assembly; the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Masa Masid program; and Social and Infrastructure development programs.

Lee believes that these projects would be put on hold once the barangay election takes place, citing the governments Build, Build Program would be derailed because of the Comelec resolution banning the implementation of infrastructure projects during election period.

On Wednesday, Malacanang announced the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to May 2018. (PNA)
