Aeta community to benefit from ‘Balay Kawayan’
ILOILO CITY, Jan. 12 (PNA) -- Aeta families with no houses of their own found a place at the ‘Balay Kawayan’ established for them free by the private sector with the help of the city government here.
Sonia Cadornigara, regional coordinator of the Homeless People's Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (HPFPI), said that they will be turning over to their intended recipients 24 housing units made of bamboo.
The houses were built in Barangay Lanit, Jaro in this city in a 3,000-square meter lot that was acquired by the city government.
She said that they are hoping for more improvements in the Aeta’s hygiene and home-keeping, as well as the community's drainage and road system.
Wilfredo Jurilla, executive director of the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) said that another 3,000 square meters will be acquired to be used as venue for their livelihood program such as handicraft making and massage training.
Their output will be marketed with the help of the city government and the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Incorporated during every Dinagyang Festival.
The housing project for the Aeta community started when one Aeta Pastor saw some Aetas roaming around the city and found out some of them were his relatives. With the help of the Ati Tribes Mission fund were raised to build their homes and a church.
Also supporting the project are the JCI Ilang-Ilang, Western Institute of Technology and the Healthy Foundation. (PNA)
