Penampang: A two-and-a-half-year-old Filipino boy believed to have been physically abused died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital last Wednesday.
Police have roped in the boy's 50-year-old grandmother and 14-year-old cousin for further investigation.
District Police Chief, DSP Madang Usat, said police had earlier classified the case as a sudden death report after being informed by the hospital about the death of the boy, identified only as Evin.
"The hospital told us the boy died at about 1.35am, believed due to breathing difficulties É so we (initially) opened a sudden death report," he said.
However, after the autopsy, police were informed the boy had suffered internal injuries, suggesting that he was physically abused, he added.
"We detained the grandmother, an IMM13 document holder, when she came to the station to settle the paperwork to claim the body at about 2pm on Tuesday," he said.
Madang said the boy's cousin was roped in from a restaurant in Jalan Tuaran, near here at about 11pm the same day.
Based on early investigations, he said the boy's parents had been deported to the Philippines, adding the boy lived with the grandmother and cousin near Beverly Hills Apartments here since.
The boy's relatives have been remanded four days under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, he added.
