Genetically modified foods also known as "Frankenstein foods".
In six countries in Europe it is currently illegal to grow certain genetically modified
crops that have been altered on a fundamental level by scientists in
laboratories.
Cross contamination has become a real problem for organic and heirloom growers
who report that it is increasingly more difficult to find seeds that do not
contain GM products.
One study noted that the risk of cross-fertilization (in potatoes) is increased
if the GM and non-GM varieties are different but flower at the same time;
if the varieties are blight resistant as the GM crop is more likely to be left
flowering; or when the main pollinator is the pollen beetle (which can travel
for many miles), not bumblebees (which tend to be more localized)
Worse still, there are health concerns for GM potatoes.
Two studies done on animals in Britain- found that GM potatoes caused intestinal
and stomach lesions in the lab rats and mice.
