70 houses, 3 Classrooms Razed in Cebu Fire

CEBU CITY -- At least 70 houses were destroyed when a fire broke out Saturday in the interior portion of Sitio Naba, Barangay Mambaling, this city.

The fire, which was tapped by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) at around 4:01 p.m., also razed three classrooms at the Bagong Buhay Building of Alaska Elementary School and damaged four other houses.

Fire Officer 3 Nilo Daculan, the investigator assigned to the incident, told Sun.Star Cebu that the fire was raised to "Task Force Alpha" or third alarm at 4:23 p.m.

Fire trucks from the cities of Talisay and Mandaue, apart from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation and Filipino-Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade, aided in the firefighting.

No one was reported hurt, Daculan said, but radio reports stated that at least seven people suffered minor burns while trying to save their belongings.

As of 7 p.m. Saturday, Daculan said he is still assessing the estimated value of the properties destroyed by the fire.

Daculan said he is verifying reports that the fire may have been triggered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank explosion.

Explosion

Initial information gathered by Daculan said that prior to the incident, a certain Lino Baclayon, a resident in the area, heard an explosion from a nearby house owned by a member of the Badjao community.

Baclayon reportedly told Daculan that the explosion came from the house of one Mobin, who was celebrating a wedding ceremony during that time.

"We still have to verify that information though," Daculan said.

Strong winds fanned the fire that immediately spread to the nearby houses and eventually destroyed about 60 to 70 structures.

Daculan said the blaze reached the school and gutted three classrooms at the Bagong Buhay Building, as the fire scene was located behind the Alaska Elementary School, which was separated only by a low fence.

Firefighters, however, managed to save the three other remaining classrooms in the building.

Road access became the primary problem during firefighting, Daculan said.

He added the road leading to the fire scene is only about four meters wide. With people coming in and out from the fire scene, most of them with their valuables in hand, fire trucks had difficulty penetrating the area.

It took 45 minutes for the firefighters to control the fire, Daculan said.

The firefighters, however, stayed in the area until early Saturday night to totally extinguish the fire
