BACOLOD CITY -- Fifty-eight soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade based in Murcia, Negros Occidental attended a training on environment laws and policies, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) here said Thursday.
PENRO head Edgardo Rostata, along with personnel of the Law Enforcement Section, led the discussions of the Presidential Decree 705 or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines, and the Wildlife Act.
Rostata said they aim to equip participants in carrying out their roles and responsibilities in the conservation and protection of natural resources.
He added that they responded to questions of the Army personnel on their specific roles as deputized environment officers of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
In 2012, the national government deputized officials and personnel of law enforcement agencies, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as environment and natural resources officers to further strengthen the government’s campaign against illegal logging.
The deputations were contained in separate resolutions signed by members of the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force created under Executive Order No. 23.
According to the DENR, the deputized military will exercise the power and authority provided for under PD 705, the administrative orders, forestry laws, rules and regulations and shall be under the supervision of the Provincial/Community Environment and Natural Resources Officers (PENROs/CENROs) within their area of jurisdiction.(PNA)
