By William B. DepasupilThe Manila TimesTwenty-five Filipinos who had worked in Guam received more than P2.4 million in back wages after the United States labor office found that the their employer failed to pay them for overtime work.
Labor Secretary Arturo D. Brion said Friday that Saipan-based Labor Attache Lourdes Lavilla received 25 checks totaling $53,123.87 (more than P2.4 million) from Senior Investigator Richard Hamilton of the US Department of Labor’s (DOL) Wage and Hour Division office in Saipan.
Brion said the amount represented the back wages of the 25 Filipinos who were employed by the Bascon Corp. and Orion Construction Corp. based in Guam.
He said the American labor personnel in Guam conducted inquiries and found that Bascon and Orion failed to fully pay the Filipinos for overtime work.
He expressed appreciation for the DOL’s investigations that resulted in the payments, saying it is a very encouraging indication of the kind of support a host country gives to overseas Filipino workers.
Hawaii-based DOL Assistant District Director Terrence J. Trotter has requested for the assistance of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in the US and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) for the distributing the back wages due the 25 Filipinos.
Brion said the DOL in Hawaii has been working with POEA on similar cases and also would like to course the distribution of the back wages through the agency. The checks are scheduled to reach the POEA by the third week of July.
