14 foreign tourism buyers visit Negros Occidental

BACOLOD CITY-- Fourteen foreign buyers visited Negros Occidental for two days as part of the eight-day Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) 2017.

Cristine Mansinares, provincial supervising tourism operations officer, on Tuesday said the delegates came to the province on September 3 and 4.

The visitors were from Indonesia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Dubai in United Arab Emirates, and California, USA.

Mansinares said the team were joined by four Philippine tourism attachés and directors, namely, Leona Nepomuceno for West Japan, Gerry Panga for Northern and Southern Europe, Richmond Jimenez for US Southwestern States and Latin America, and Warren Silo Palacio for Shanghai, China.

For two days, the group visited culinary and heritage sites in the cities of Bacolod, Talisay, Silay, and Victorias, and shopped for “pasalubong” (souvenirs) at the Association of Negros Producers Showroom in this city, she said.

“After visiting the province, we hope that these foreign tour operators will include the tourism offerings of Negros Occidental in their Philippine itineraries,” Mansinares said.

PHITEX is a marketing activity conceived in 1996 with the end-goal of increasing tourist arrivals in the country. This year, it started August 29.

Now on its 16th year, PHITEX is the country’s biggest travel-trade event, hosting key wholesale buyers from all over the world for one-on-one business meetings with accredited local tourism suppliers.

Patterned after the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), this event provides qualified buyers actual experience of what the country can offer as a tourism destination through pre- and post-tours.

Locally, Negros Occidental is the second most visited place by Filipino domestic travelers, according to the 2016 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors (HSDV) recently released by the Philippine Statistics Authority 9PSA) and Department of Tourism (DOT).

Topping the list is National Capital Region followed by Negros Occidental, Pangasinan, Cavite, Quezon, Bohol, Cebu, Camarines Sur, Laguna, and Leyte.

The HSDV, conducted every two years since 2005, gathered data on domestic and outbound travels mainly for policy-making purposes. (PNA)
