MANILA, Philippines – (5th UPDATE) The fire that hit a shopping complex in Pasay City was finally declared under control, 10 hours after it started Thursday, according to the Bureau of Fire and National Capital Region-Tactical Operations Center.

The blaze at the Galleria Shopping Mall, which began at 6 a.m., was put under control at 3:35 p.m., the center said.

The mall’s proximity to the Light Rail Transit Baclaran Station prompted LRT authorities to temporarily limit the trips from the Monumento to the EDSA terminals.

The fire reached Task Force Echo, the fifth alarm in a seven-step fire alert level system, said Superintendent Sofia Mendoza, district fire marshal of the Bureau of Fire and the National Capital Region Tactical Operations Center (NCR-TOC).

A task force status means all the fire trucks available in Metro Manila must help.

Firefighters had a hard time putting out the blaze because of poor crowd control, according to a radio report. Most of the goods sold in the mall were RTW garments, to which damage was estimated at P91 million by fire officials.

Meanwhile, the LRT will service commuters up to the EDSA station even if the fire had been put out, administrator Mel Robles said.

"We have to check the system if we can resume operations," Robles said in a phone interview.

The fire was said to have originated from a stall on the mall's second floor. There have been no reported casualties.
