With cement prices remaining high despite the scrapping of levies imposed on the product, the Department of Trade and Industry is not inclined to recommend an extension of the zero-tariff regime for cement.
Trade Secretary Peter Favila said that, in general, the government’s thrust was to make commodity prices as reasonable as possible for consumers.
“For as long as it benefits the Philippine market and our consumers, I’ll support it,†he told reporters at the sidelines of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority’s Investors’ Recognition Day yesterday.
“But if I don’t see prices improving, I won’t recommend [maintaining zero tariff]. I’m not excited to do it.â€
Executive Order 766, which Malacañang issued in November last year, scrapped the tariffs on cement until June.
