TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines — The regional trade fair held here last weekend posted total sales of P38.5 million, which exceeded the target set by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
DTI Bohol provincial director Maria Elena Arbon said the exhibitors of the One Town-One Product (OTOP) exhibit held on July 22-26 achieved P38,577,332.05, surpassing the P25-million target set for the OTOP trade fair held at the city’s Island City Mall.
The trade exhibitors from Bohol reported sales of over P21.3 million at the end of the five-day regional sales, Arbon said.
Negros Oriental came in second with sales totaling P14,410,778.75 while Cebu reported P1,103,920 in the fair, which was a spin-off of the Bohol Sandugo provincial trade fair.
Region 8 traders reported sales of P979,446 followed by Siquijor with P690,970 while Caraga products sold out P73,230.
Arbon said the main objective of the trade fair is "to have access to, as well as expand, markets."
"It aims to generate sales for local producers that will enable them to sustain their livelihood and support job maintenance or generation," she added.
Aside from this, the trade fair provided a venue for products that resulted from the ongoing DTI programs that promote livelihood and job generation.
Despite the global financial crisis, the organizers had remained bullish because the usual influx of walk-in buyers has provided a good source of cash flow for the producers.
Arbon also explained that the institutional buyers from Cebu and Manila always included the fair in their calendar every year.
"The Bohol brand and its position as one of the top tourist destinations in the country is another plus factor that adds to the drawing power of the fair," she said.
Buyers usually combine business with leisure when they go to Bohol for the Sandugo fair.
"There is also always something new, innovative and creative every year, thanks to a sustained product development effort done by exhibitors and DTI every year," she added.
The booths are categorized into food, non-food and tourism investment promo.
There were two venues for the displays this year with 63 booths located inside "The Block," an improvised closed-door portable tent put up by the ICM management in the mall parking area.
"An additional feature this year (was) the two booths by persons with disabilities," said Jerome Gabin, senior trade and industry development specialist.
The participating groups were the Bohol Deaf Academy and the Bohol Federation of Disabled Persons.
They were among the 27 booths located inside the ICM and the non-food exhibitors.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was the guest of honor during the ribbon-cutting ceremonies as part of the Bohol Day celebration last July 22.
