Reliable Power Supply in Fort Bonifacio Global City Taguig City
« on: October 21, 2010, 08:09:08 AM »
Power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) recently inaugurated its newly-constructed P439 million substation that will ensure reliable power supply in Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

The 115kV-34.5kV substation has an initial capacity of 83 megavolt amperes (MVA), which is enough to deliver power to critical establishments (e.g. hospital, embassy, commercial centers) and communities within Global City and areas adjacent to it.

Meralco’s substations convert high-voltage power coming from the transmission system to levels suitable for consumption of end-power users.

The latest substation is the 12th substation of Meralco that employs state-of-the-art gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology.

The GIS technology allows Meralco to adopt a compact building design to save on space requirements and to blend with the surrounding community.

Meralco said in a statement that the FBGC-4 substation aligns with the theme of Bonifacio Global City as a prime location where "technology meets aesthetics."

Meralco executives, led by its president & CEO Manuel Pangilinan and COO Oscar Reyes, inaugurated the new facility along with guests Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras and Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Zenaida Ducut.

Pangilinan said the substation is part of a bigger plan for Global City, which is to build four substations.

“Each substation will have three transformers, each transformer having a capacity of 83 MVA. After further developments, there will be a total of four substations and 12 transformers,” he said.

“Eventually, we will build up to about a thousand MVA when there is full development of the city. We will scale it up as and when demand is needed,” Pangilinan said, adding that Meralco want to assure their customers and occupants in Global City that it is ready to deliver reliable and efficient supply of power.

Almendras welcomed the completion of the substation because it will reduce system losses.

"Energy efficiency also translates to better resource management for all of us -- it takes care of our environment. Beyond technology, it is commitment to energy efficiency,” he said.

Meralco expects greater efficiency, reliability and adequacy in its delivery of electric service in Taguig City and Fort Bonifacio following the completion of the new substation.

This will also help reduce Meralco’s technical losses by around 2.4 megawatt-hours a year, which translates to around P15.1 million reduction in system loss charges to its customers.

Meralco executive vice president and networks head Ricardo Buencamino said the new infrastructure is part of Meralco’s capital expenditures approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission under Performance-Based Regulation (PBR).

PBR is an internationally-accepted mechanism that promotes the efficient operation of utility firms, enabling them to render high quality service to their customers.

Meralco adopted the PBR in 2007 and has since built more facilities that improve service delivery to its 4.8 million customers. (PNA)
