The Philippine Tobacco Institute (PTI), an association of cigarette manufacturers and importers, has expressed dismay at the pronouncement by Malacañang on the government’s avowed policy of “no compromise†on tax matters.
PTI President Rodolfo Salanga was reacting to a statement made by Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda, who said that there would be no compromise on the bill of the Department of Finance that seeks to restructure the existing excise tax system on cigarettes and alcohol products, which will push up the tax rate on cigarettes by as much as 1,000 percent.
Lacierda claimed that this “rationalization†of the tax scheme will result in the collection of an additional R60 billion in revenues.
Salanga expressed apprehension at this claim, saying “rationalization†is a euphemism used when people are about to lose their jobs.
“Be warned when a bureaucrat starts mouthing words like ‘rationalize’ or ‘right-size.’ What usually happens is a number of people will find themselves jobless,†Salanga said in a statement. - source: Manila Bulletin
