The Subdivision and Housing Developers Association has called for a faster processing of permits and licenses to sustain the momentum in housing production and address the 4.65 million units housing backlog in the country.

This was identified as part of the gaps in the value chain by the SHDA in the industry roadmap that it submitted to the Board of Investments along with 10 other industries.

Paul Tanchi, SHDA president, noted that delays in development permits at local government unit level have could hinder mass housing production.

Aside from permits and licenses, the SHDA also said that maintaining affordability and sustainability of housing in the country through financing schemes, and by developing a comprehensive government housing assistance for targeted segments are priority areas that government should look into.

According to Tanchi, before the roadmap process, the industry was aware that a housing backlog exists but the extent was not very clear.

”Now that we have prepared the roadmap, we were able to probe the issues affecting the value chain of our sector and factors that could help it grow,” said Tanchi.

“We recognize the need for stronger collaboration among industry players, key shelter agencies, and the national government to address these gaps,” added Tanchi.

Based on the mass housing industry road map, a 1-peso increase in investment spending in the housing industry generates P3.32 additional output to the economy.

Likewise, a P100M investment in construction is estimated to generate P47M in additional household income which corresponds to the creation of 228 direct jobs.

Trade and Industry undersecretary and BOI managing head Adrian Cristobal Jr., who spearheaded an industry-wide road map formulation, stressed the need for genuine collaboration with the private sector.

“We are reviving industry policy through the industry development road maps project so we can all agree on visions, strategies, and deliberate actions for industries to create meaningful jobs in the country,” Cristobal said.

Cristobal added that same shift to industry policy is also happening not just in the Philippines but also in Europe, South Asia, and South America.
