They have already buried a loved one who died in a senseless killing, but the grieving family still further suffers pain from a twisted story circulated regarding the incident.

Spread around the town of Maribojoc and also printed in a local paper (not STANDARD) is the yarn that the suspect killed the victim,16-year old Mark Angelo “Mac-mac” Briones because he was among those who allegedly abused the suspect’s daughter.

Such story was vehemently denied by the family of Mark.

“Mark was a young, jolly high school student and belongs to a God-fearing, Christian family. Such story was concocted to justify his death under the hands of a ruthless killer,” the victim’s elder sister said.

“The victim was not even a friend of the suspect’s daughter,” a witness added.

A murder charge has been filed against suspect Eduardo Mabunay alias Carte who stabbed to death Mark, 6:30 in the evening of Tuesday, last Sept. 4 near the town’s centuries-old Catholic church. The suspect allegedly was looking for a certain Bernie, (a boyfriend of his daughter) and not finding the latter, turned his rage on Mark, stabbing the victim eleven times.

The suspect’s daughter reportedly did not come home Sunday night.

A witness saw earlier the suspect near the vicinity of the victim’s house as early as 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. The suspect stayed till dark waiting until he pounced on the victim who was walking with a friend Michael “Mike-mike” Morgia, on a road near the church.

The suspect, who had records of violent behavior, also accosted the victim a day before the incident with a threat, saying: “Sige, sukad karon bantaye ning ako nawong. Kaila nako nimo (remember my face, because now I know you),” a witness said.

Two days after, the suspect indeed made good his threat by stabbing the victim.

“Mark has a long, bright future ahead of him, but his life was cut short by a killer.”

“Such story was very unfair,” a relative also said. It was even Mark who advised his cousin Bernie to bring to her parent’s home his sweetheart (the suspect’s daughter) when the two knocked at about 5:30 dawn on Monday of Sept. 3, at a Kuya’s house where he was staying,

Mark did not allow Bernie and his sweetheart to enter the house that night.

“We are the one that suffered the loss of a family member, but fabricated stories are made up to put us on the negative side,” the victim’s kin lamented.

I am the Aunt of Macmac Briones who wrote the letter regarding our grieving family.  First of all, I want to thank everyone that give their time reading my letter and understanding how we feel.  I also want to thank Mr. Alfredo Amora who give his time publishing this story.  I don't know him personally.  All I did was look for an email address online and see if someone is willing to help.  Fortunately, Fred responded me directly, he became our voice but still very fair for both parties. My family and I really admire him for his integrity.

Like what he mentioned, we want justice but not revenge.  We still have to love one another despite of what had happen.  Hate or forgiveness will not bring Macmac back and the killer's family got nothing to do with Eduardo Mabunay alias Carte's action.  Each of us are responsible of our own action so Carte has to pay for what he did but his family must move on with their lives just like us.
