Maribojoc, Bohol - The 47th edition of the annual Maribojoc Chistmas Basketball League reeled off yesterday with 15 cage teams vying for the top prizes.

A parade around the town’s main thoroughfare preceded the opening rites at the Maribojoc Cultural Center. Fifteen tandems from the municipality’s 22 barangays featuring their beauteous muses displayed their wares before the townspeople who lined up the sidestreets and cheered the youthful players who paraded with the top officials of the league’s management committee.

Concededly the province’s oldest cage festivity, the yuletide tournament fired off last night and is set to end on Jan. 2, next year.

Mayor Leoncio “Boy” Evasco Jr., himself a cage standout during his seminary days and early years as a clergyman, guested the opening program. He recalled the youth to shy away from the dreaded drug menace and instead, concentrate on sports development.

Fifteen teams will exchanged the spheroid aimed to clinch the championship plum. These include Poblacion’s Sesame Street, Poblacion’s Goodah, Tinibgan Hilltop Hikers, Punsod, Bayacabac, Jandig, Punta Cruz, St. Isidore Foundation of the Agahay-Busao-Toril combination, Bood Kcabser, Cabawan, Aliguay-Lincod Cagers, San Roque Reptiles, Pagnitoan, Lagtangon, and Anislag.

The champion team will be richer by P5,000 including gold medals for all players, courtesy of the Philippine Sports Commission; 1st runner-up - P3,000; 2nd runner-up – P2,000; and 3rd runner-up – P1,000.

Legaspi lawyer Eddie Busalla, original cager of this 47-year old tourney will sponsor the Engr. Paulito Fuertes Cup to be given to the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Fuertes is the founding organizer of the yearly MCBL.

Winners of the Mythical Five Awards will also receive medals from the Philippine Sports Commission.
Veteran Sports leader Moises “Boy” Descallar is this season’s MCBL commissioner.
