BOHOL, Philippines - Police filed Wednesday, November 22, a parricide complaint against a 74-year-old man who hacked to death his own son the other day in Mabini, Bohol, a rare crime that shocked residents of this northeastern town with 27,171 population.

Apolonio Libres, a farmer and widower who raised 15 children including victim Avelino Libres, did not resist police arrest after he hacked several times his 30-year-old son using a 30-inch long bolo while the latter was sleeping inside his father's house.

Reports reaching the Bohol Police Provincial Office revealed that the incident occurred shortly before Tuesday midnight and was personally witnessed by the victim's 19-year-old live-in partner, Renelyn Lapingcao.

Lapingcao was sleeping with her child inside a room of the house owned by Apolonio when she was awakened by a heavy thud coming from the sala, police report said.

She then rushed to the sala - and there she saw Apolonio hacking to death his own son, who was sleeping on a makeshift bamboo bed, the report added.

Taking her child and without saying a word, Lapingcao immediately went out of the house and ran toward the house of Blecila Libres-Tutor, one of the victim's sisters, located in Abaca, Mabini, about 110 km from the capital city of Tagbilaran.

Police Officer 1 Leonil Bayonas of the Mabini Police Station told Rappler in a phone interview Wednesday that that based on their investigation, the elderly Apolonio had been fed up of his son, who would repeatedly beat him up whenever being drunk.

Bayonas said the suspect so far is not showing any feelings of remorse after the incident, adding that Apolonio would only discuss to the police about the instances his son would maltreat him.

Police said the shocking crime is not related to the use of illegal drugs, citing statements from barangay officials, neighbors, and relatives of both the victim and the suspect.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
