Thrilled Violet Booth has got back the engagement ring she threw into a field during a lovers’ tiff 67 years ago — after her grandson dug it up.

She and fiance Samuel hunted in vain for the diamond and gold ring and had to buy another when they wed months later in 1941.

But metal detector fan Leighton Boyes, 33, found it in just TWO HOURS after he pinpointed the spot where the pair had rowed on a country walk.

Yesterday Violet, now 88, wept with joy as she put on the ring. She said: "This is amazing and very emotional."

Violet, whose husband died 15 years ago, added: "We got another ring in time for the ceremony but it is not the same, is it? This ring means the world to me and brings back so many happy memories. I can’t stop looking at it."

Leighton took maps round to his gran’s home at Thurmaston, Leics, to identify the spot 16 miles away at Gilmorton. Then he got permission from the landowner to comb the area.

He said: "I knew it meant so much to her. She had regretted throwing the ring away as soon as it left her hand."
