The 256th annual observance in Loon of the feast of Our Lady of Light also marks the 10th edition of the annual SidlaKasilak or Festival of Lights.

This year’s celebration carries the theme “Nurturing Cultural Heritage for Sustained and Vibrant Tourism”.

For ten days, from August 30 to September 8, the Loonanons will be treated to nightly cultural events, as follows:

August 30, Sunday - The Singing Priests in Concert. Sponsor: Department of Education - Loon North and South Districts

August 31, Monday - Melodic Visions: A Concert of the Blind. Sponsors: Senior citizens, Loon Government Retirees Association, and women’s group

September 1, Tuesday - Entertainment Variety Show. Sponsor: Du Ek Sam

September 2, Wednesday – “Sadsad ug Huni nga Way Kyemi Kyemi”. Sponsors: Market vendors, transport operators and business group

September 3, Thursday - Music and Dance Showcase. Sponsors: University of Bohol – Loon, and First Consolidated Bank - Loon Branch

September 4, Friday - A Night of Beauty and Glamor: Search for SHA Personality of the Year. Sponsors: Sacred Heart Academy and Rural Bank of Loon (Bohol), Inc.

September 5, Saturday - Musikang Loonanon Songwriting Competition Finals Night, featuring Loonanons Luke Mejares (Rhythm and Blues King of the Philippines) and Fr. Jonas Mejares (singing priest of Iloilo; university vice president and dean of the College of Music, University of San Agustin, Iloilo City).        The image of the “Birhen sa Kasilak”, patroness of the entire island of Mindanao, was reported to have been originally enthroned in a church in Butuan, Agusan del Norte on September 8, 1597.  When the bandits of the southern seas (i.e., Magindanao, Balangingi, Iranon or Illanon, and Laut) attacked the coastal villages of Mindanao, concerned Butuanons sailed north towards Bohol bringing with them the wooden statue of Our Lady.

       Unfortunately, the attackers were also wreaking havoc on some communities on the island.  The group was determined to sail towards Cebu but, caught in a storm, the Marian devotees opted to sail towards the western rim of Bohol, dropping anchor in Sandingan, a tranquil island near mainland Loon.

       Upon knowing that a well-established community existed in Napo, the group led by Rev. Fr. Pedro Lopez, SJ brought the image to the latter where it was warmly received and enthroned.  This allegedly happened in 1610.  For several years, the Birhen sa Kasilak was venerated by the Loonanon faithful in this old poblacion.

       In 1753, Fray Manuel de Elizalde of the Jesuit Mission became the first parish priest of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Our Lady of Light).  In 1768, the Jesuits ceded administration of the parish to the Recollects.  The image of the Kasilak has since been permanently enthroned in the present church of Loon which was completed in 1855.

       The first miracle attributed to the Kasilak happened in the 18th century when a band of pirates sailed towards Napo to loot its houses of valuables.  Our Lady allegedly appeared atop the steps of Inang-angan (4-flight stairway of 174 steps, made of coral-stone blocks or tinableya) in her most radiant glory.  The blinding lights radiating from her forced the intruders to sail away.  Since then, countless untold miracles have been experienced by the Loonanon faithful.

       Today, SidlaKasilak, Loon’s Festival of Lights, brings back the memory of those days when Our Lady journeyed to Loon from Mindanao. Every year, a symbolic reenactment is staged on September 6 to commemorate the arrival of her image from Butuan via Sandingan.

       The “Birhen sa Kasilak” exhorts all of us to seek the True Light, Jesus Christ, especially in these times when selfishness, corruption, indifference and deceit seem to eclipse the real essence of life and living.  She also encourages everyone to pass on this Light to all families and communities so that all will live in unity in a much better and enlightened world.

Congratulations to Rey Tampos for winning the grand prize in the Musikang Loonanon songwriting competition with his "Hanap nga Handurawan", and to his wife, Marife Robles Larido - Tampos for winning the Best Interpreter award.

Congratulations also to Sacred Heart Academy for winning the championship in the SidlaKasilak Festival of Lights Street Dancing and Dance of Lights Competition last Sunday evening. And also to the runners-up: Saint Teresa Academy and Cabilao National High School.
