The unthinkable killer flashfloods that brought unparalleled Christmas grief to two
Mindanao cities had led to the ban on the cutting of trees, regardless of species, in critical Loon barangays.
Loon Mayor Lloyd Peter Lopez suspended the issuance of tree cutting permits in at least 15 barangays covered by the Moalong River watershed where illegal cutting of trees already caused much alarm.
He issued Executive Order No. 02 this year to prohibit tree cutting, citing the December floods and landslides in
Cagayan de Oro City,
Iligan City and other parts of the country which were blamed to the senseless abuses on forests.
It is “urgent†for Loon forest cover’s preservation to prevent or reduce the risks of similar disasters to agriculture, vital infrastructures,
properties and human lives themselves, according to the mayor in his order.
