First district Rep. Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has advised the consuming public to help conserve water and energy as a practical and sensible measure to cushion the effects of the looming energy and water crisis in this southern port city and other parts of the country.

Salazar’s advise came as the El Niño phenomenon is taking its toll on almost all areas of the country, drying up rivers and lakes which are the main sources of energy and water supply.

“I encourage everyone to save energy and water to adapt to climate change,” Salazar said.

The Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco) has resorted to power shedding while the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) has implemented water rationing scheme since last week to ensure sufficient supply of energy and water to the consumers in this southern port city.

Salazar said the decrease in the water level in Lake Lanao due to the onset of the dry season is the main reason that power supply is erratic in this southern port city in particular and Mindanao in general.

“The same is true in other areas of the country,” she said.

The water level in Tumaga river and other tributaries has also dropped due to insufficient rain, which is the main reason the ZCWD has implemented water rationing scheme in this city.

Salazar said the present situation requires public commitment to energy management strategies and to water conservation strategies.

She stressed the residential and business sectors have to do their share of smartly managing water and energy consumption while the different utilities, government agencies and other sectors are undertaking measures to help mitigate the impact of water and power shortage. (PNA)
