Traslacion 2018 should avoid narrow streets, says task force chief
MANILA, Jan. 11 (PNA) -- Traslacion 2018 could replicate this year’s peaceful and orderly procession and zero death if it is rerouted to avoid narrow streets, head of Task Force Manila Cleanup 2017, Che Borromeo, has said.
“The procession had to pass through narrow and constricted roads, that’s why it took longer to reach Quiapo Church than it should have,†Borromeo said, noting that it was difficult for the ‘andas’, the carriage bearing the image of the Black Nazarene, and the millions of devotees following it, to pass through narrow streets.
“The procession should only be limited along main roads, in wider streets so that it would be easier to accommodate more people and cleaning up afterwards would be easier and faster," he said.
Borromeo said that Mayor Joseph Estrada has heaped praises on the city’s street sweepers and cleanup crews, whom he described as “behind-the-scene heroesâ€, for spearheading the post-Traslacion cleanup efforts.
Monday’s Traslacion lasted 22 hours and 19 minutes, the longest in the annual procession’s history, and was participated in by a record 3.5 million, based on estimates of the Manila Police District (MPD), he said, adding that unfortunately, the procession also left 12 truckloads of waste in the streets, also a new record.
“We have more garbage now as compared to recent years because of the huge number of devotees who participated in the procession. The procession itself lasted 22 hours, so the longer the procession, the higher the volume of garbage it leaves,†he pointed out. (PNA)
