Sufficient Rice in the Philippines in 2013
« on: August 21, 2010, 06:55:56 AM »
The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Monday assured long lasting food security for Filipinos in the coming months due to the bumper harvest by farmers despite the effects of the El Niño Phenomenon.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala also said during a press briefing at the DA Central Office in Quezon City that his office and the local government units (LGUs) have forged a partnership for food security, self-sufficiency.

Alcala said he has began consulting with local government executives to renew and strengthen partnerships to successfully attain President Benigno C. Aquino III’s food security program, particularly in attaining rice self-sufficiency by 2013.

“I have already met with LGUs like the officials from Davao region. There, I met with governors and mayors during the special board meeting of the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), chaired by Davao del Norte governor Rodolfo del Rosario,” Alcala told reporters.

The DA chief said he sought their support to open up more rice areas, plant more upland organic and fancy rice for domestic and export, increase production of white corn to ease the pressure on rice, and rehabilitation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

He said the DA has efforts to achieve in various agricultural products (crops and farm animals) that will ensure better income for farmers and assure food security for consumers.

He emphasized that as much as possible, rice importation would be limited. The money used for importing rice should be used to buy rice produced by local farmers so that they will be motivated to produce some more.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
