School Tragedy in Zamboanga City
« on: October 23, 2010, 11:35:17 PM »
Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary for Regional Affairs Rizalino Rivera on Saturday pledged to work out for the release of financial assistance to the victims of stabbing spree at a school in this southern port city.

Rivera issued the statement when he visited the victims -- two elementary school teachers and four pupils -- at the Zamboanga Brent Hospital (ZBH) here.

Rivera also said they honor the bravery showed by the late Lorna Pulalon, a Grade 2 teacher, who shielded the school pupils from the attacker that caused her death.

Four people were killed while six others were wounded when an ex-convict ran amuck around 1:45 p.m. Friday at the elementary school in Barangay Talisayan, 26 kilometers west of this city.

Aside from Pulalon, also killed were Grade 6 pupil Cess Dorin Orpiano, 12, Ruben Flores, 64, a guardian, and the suspect, Feli Mateo, 51.

The suspect was killed by the villagers living near the school who came to the aid of the helpless school teachers and pupils.

Hospitalized due to stab wounds were Ludivina Balilo and Joni Torres, a Grade 5 and Grade 6 school teachers, respectively; and school pupils Joshua Demco, 11; Maria Lyka Basing, 12; Princess Briones, 12; and Michaela Jacona, 12.

After visiting the victim at ZBH, Rivera went to the elementary school in Barangay Talisayan as well as the slain victims.

Rivera visited and condoled with the families of the slain victims of the tragic incident. (PNA)
