The Commission on Elections was asked on Wednesday to declare the province of Rizal, especially the municipalities of Binangonan, Cardona and Rodriguez (Montalban), as election hot spots.
In a press conference, Rodriguez Vice Mayor Esteban "Steve" Salonga, provincial chairman of the Liberal Party (LP), asked Comelec Chairman Jose Melo to place Rizal province, particularly the said three towns under the Comelec control and supervision to ensure the conduct of an open, honest and peaceful elections on May 10, 2010.
In a three-page letter to the Comelec, Salonga reported an escalating number of incidents of political harassment and intimidation perpetrated allegedly by Binangonan Mayor Cecilio "Boyet" Ynares, his nephew Governor Casimiro "Junjun" Ynares III and Vice Governor Frisco San Juan Jr. against the LP provincial and local candidates in the province.
It was cited that last Monday (Feb. 15), Rodriguez Mayor Pedro "Ping" Cuerpo and Salonga had just left a party when they were stopped by certain Binangonan town policemen, whom they believed were instructed to harass them.
For his part, Cuerpo said that they were stopped for several minutes by the Binangonan police and it was Salonga who talked to the police to let them go.
Cuerpo and Salonga are running for the positions of Rizal governor and vice governor, respectively, in the forthcoming elections. - PNA
