OPA warned against preservative-laced vegetables
KALIBO, Aklan, Dec. 19 (PNA) -- The Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) urged Aklan residents to be vigilant against the high possibility of the proliferation of preservative-laced vegetable in the province.
Uldarico las Pinas, high value crops coordinator of OPA, on Monday, said that they received complaints from residents on the matter.
"Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to be scientific in our findings to prove that a certain vegetable, especially cabbage was laced with preservatives or was it made up of synthetic materials. We do not have available laboratory in the province to do the confirmation," he said.
Due to the said limitation, he said that the OPA does not have power to prosecute suspected sellers of preservative-laced vegetable.
"What we could only do is to warn the residents to be vigilant, especially this Christmas season. It should be better if they buy vegetables from backyard garden or plant their own to ensure their health," he said.
Residents here fear that they may incur cancer if they eat too much of these suspected preservative-laced or vegetables made of synthetic materials. (PNA)
