NegOcc partners with NMIS for meat safety

BACOLOD CITY -- The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Occidental is working closely with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) to ensure safe meat for Negrenses especially during the holidays.

Dr. Renante Decena, chief of PVO, said over the weekend that consumers should be aware of “double-dead” meat products, and substitutes such as horse meat offered as beef possibly sold in the local markets.

Decena said the provincial government has provided an office space for the NMIS inside the PVO building here so both units can coordinate in ensuring that only safe and quality meat products are bought by consumers.

Unscrupulous vendors may take advantage of the busy market situation when demand is at its peak, he added.

Decena said the provincial government wants to raise awareness that the PVO has its own meat laboratory.

“If they have problems with the quality of the meat products they purchase, they can submit samples for examination,” he said.

Decena added that consumers should also look for the meat inspection certificate of vendors posted on the market stalls.

He pointed out that safe and quality meat should have stamps from dressing plants and slaughterhouses to prove that these products have passed the required inspection.

Moreover, consumers are also encouraged to check the appearance of the products.

Fresh meat is pinkish while “double-dead” is pale and has blood clot, Decena said.

“The provincial government campaigns for wholesome, safety, and hygienic meat shops which consumers should patronize,” he added. (PNA)
