National artist Virgilio Almario inducted as NCCA chair
MANILA, Jan. 12 (PNA) -- National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario also know as “Rio Alma†on Thursday was officially inducted as chair of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Almario, who will chair the NCCA board of commissioners until 2019, will be replacing former chair Felipe de Leon Jr.
Sen. Loren Legarda, who administered oath of the newly-appointed chair, welcomed his induction as an honor for the NCCA.
“To the new NCCA Chair, Virgilio Almario, I am extremely happy because you were assigned to head the agency. It is an honor for the NCCA to be headed by a National Artist," Legarda said in Filipino.
She also expressed excitement on his future plans and looked forward to working with him.
“I am excited about your plans for culture and arts. I know you will greatly contribute to continue significant programs of the agency given your wide knowledge and experience in culture,†she added.
Legarda, meanwhile, reiterated her proposal to establish a Department of Culture that will ensure the preservation, enrichment, and dynamic evolution of a Filipino national culture.
Prior to being NCCA chair, Almario was previously Executive Director of the NCCA from 1998 to 2001. He also serves as chair of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino.
He is also a poet, literary historian and critic having published 12 books of poetry including Makinasyon and Peregrinasyon, and the trilogy Doktrinang Anakpawis, Mga Retrato at Rekwerdo and Muli, Sa Kandungan ng Lupa. (PNA)
