Mass deworming set for barangays, public schools in Bacolod City
BACOLOD CITY, Jan. 11 (PNA) -- A mass deworming for all barangays and public schools here will be conducted next week, the City Health Office (CHO) announced Wednesday.
For the city’s 61 barangays, the deworming will be held on January 13 while for public elementary and high schools, on January 19.
Ma. Carmela Gensoli, head of the CHO, said the initiative aims to prevent and control soil transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and schistosomiasis among the vulnerable age groups.
It is part of the simultaneous National Mass Deworming Activity led by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Education (DepEd).
Children infested with parasites suffer from malnutrition and anemia, as among the common effects, Gensoli said.
Free deworming drugs will be given to children aged 12 to 59 months in the barangays and to those enrolled in private schools aged 5 to 18 years old.
Out-of-school youth can also avail of free deworming.
Students from Grades 1 to 10 enrolled in public schools will be served in their respective campuses.
According to the DOH, routine deworming every six months will prevent the growth of these micro-organisms.
Gensoli said that the DOH has procured sufficient deworming drugs for the bi-annual campaign to ensure the provision of such every January and July to targeted group age.
A monitoring team has been assigned to ensure the efficient implementation of the program to prevent adverse effects of the mass drug administration, she added.(PNA)
