CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Feb. 15 (PNA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has launched its livelihood program in the municipality of Sto. Tomas here to help marginalized residents in getting steady source of income.
DOLE regional director Ernesto Bihis, together with Sto. Tomas Mayor Joselito Naguit and other local officials, awarded Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) and Kabuhayan starter kits to the municipality’s 100 qualified beneficiaries.
The program was aimed at providing indigent families, especially ambulant vendors and others whose backyard business was severely affected by the typhoons and floodings last year, with steady source of income, Bihis said.
Luningning Vergara, head of the province’s Public Employment Services Office (PESO), said the DOLE had given P600,000 for the livelihood program while the local government unit of Sto. Tomas shared 20 percent of the program cost as its counterpart.
Vergara said that similar livelihood programs of the DOLE were launched in the municipalities of Guagua, Sta. Ana and the City of San Fernando earlier this year.
“We can very clearly see that the livelihood programs of DOLE directly benefit the needy families and that government funds are well spent and go to the intended public,†she said.
Aside from TUPAD and Kabuhayan starter kits, other livelihood programs of DOLE in the province include Kabataan Ito (K-Ito) which provides computer literacy learning sessions to out-of-school youths and nego-cart projects.
At present, Vergara said 90 percent of the province’s total number of municipalities were benefited by DOLE’s livelihood programs.
“For this year, the labor and employment office has earmarked a whopping P3.8 million to fund livelihood programs in the entire province of Pampanga,†she said.
