The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has warned the public against
leptospirosis which usually peaks during the rainy season.
Dr. Anna de Guzman, provincial health officer, issued the warning due to the increasing number of persons afflicted with leptospirosis this year as compared to last year.
Records showed there were already 10 leptospirosis cases recorded from January 1 to June 19 this year as compared to only two during the same period last year.
The disease is caused by the infection of a person with the bacteria leptospira caused by the urine of infected rats that mixes with the floodwater during the rainy season.
De Guzman said before a person wades into the water, he or she must wear boots because no one knows if the pond which one would step on is infected with leptospira. - PNA
