Kidnapping in Zamboanga Sibugay
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:23:02 AM »
Despite the release of retired Army sergeant from two weeks captivity, government troops continue to track down the whereabouts of the group responsible for former soldier's kidnapping in this southern port city.

Director Felizardo Serapio, chief of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations (DIPO)-West, said the troops were scouring the hinterlands of Zamboanga Sibugay in search for the kidnappers.

Serapio said offensive was immediately launched by DIPO personnel, in coordination with the Zamboanga Sibugay police force as well as the military troops, after they rescued the victim identified as retired Army 2Lt. Benjamin Almonte.

Serapio said that Almonte was rescued around 9 p.m. Friday in the boundary of R. T. Lim and Tungawan towns in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Almonte, 55, was kidnapped last Feb. 6 while he was fishing off the coast of Barangay Manicahan, 20 kilometers east of this city.

Serapio said the troops rescued Almonte upon receipt of information from concerned residents in the area that two armed men were seen dragging along with them an unidentified man, which later turned out to be Almonte.

However, Serapio said the troops were already alerted a day before Almonte was rescued, citing they had received information that the victim would be brought to Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Serapio said the two suspects rattled and fled leaving behind Almonte upon seeing a convoy of vehicle with DIPO-West personnel on board approaching towards them.-PNA (source)
