To strengthen the provincial inter-agency committee against trafficking in persons and violence against women and children (PCAT-VAWC), Governor David Suarez issued Executive Order 18, mandating it to institute policies and programs to protect women and children victims of trafficking by formulating local ordinances and resolutions.
Provincial Gender and Development (PGAD) chief Ofelia Palayan said that in line with the directive of the provincial governor, PCAT-VAWC will create and establish systems on surveillance, investigation and rescue to ensure effective and efficient coordination among local government units.
Palayan said that PCAT-VAWC will monitor and oversee the strict implementation of Republic Act 9208 or the Anti-trafficking in Persons Act, Republic Act 9262 or Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, and other related laws for the protection of women and children.
To achieve its goal, the PGAD council has created an "anti-trafficking referral network" composed of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), Provincial Employment Service Office (PESO), Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Education (DepEd), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Philippine National Police (PNP) and the PGAD office to monitor and assist victims of human trafficking.
Meanwhile, Quezon’s Multi-Sectoral Provincial Nutrition Council (MPNC) will be implementing a complimentary feeding program in seven towns of the province starting October 1 to December 31, this year.
Provincial Health Officer Agripino Tullas said at the recent meeting of MPNC that the feeding program will be conducted in the towns of Jomalig, Buenavista, Patnanungan, San Narciso, Burdeos, Pililio and General Nakar.
Tullas said the program aims to uplift the nutritional status of children and further fight the prevalence rate of malnutrition in the province, specifically in the seven towns.
He said the P70,000 initial fund coming from the Department of Health (DOH) will be used for the purchase of "Joemix" products of the Atimonan municipal government to be used for the supplementary
feeding program.
Joemix is a mixture of indigenous food such as rice, dried mongo and sesame seeds. Its nutrient composition are: fat-12.8 grams; iron-2.5 grams; calcium-147 milligrams; protein-13.2 grams and energy, Dr. Tullas said.
He said that MPNC has also sought the assistance of the provincial government to support the complementary feeding program by providing additional fund to cover or assist other municipalities in Quezon with cases on malnutrition.
