Some 750 Muslims from all over Pangasinan gathered at the Dagupan City plaza early Monday to voice out their condemnation against an alleged anti-Islam film entitled “Innocence of Muslimsâ€.
The rally from 8 to 10:30 a.m., was peaceful and orderly as the city police, boosted by augmentations teams from the Pangasinan Police Office, cordoned the city plaza to make sure that no trouble-maker can enter.
The mass action was staged by Muslims from 22 municipalities and three cities of Pangasinan who began their protest with a march around downtown Dagupan City, holding placards that condemned the film which they described as anti-Islam. The film can be accessed online.
Most of their placards called for the removal of the movie from the social networking sites and a ban on the showing of the movie throughout the country, which they considered as blasphemous to their prophet Muhammad and their religion.
"The Innocence of Muslims" trailer, which was produced by Sam Bacile, posted on YouTube had already caused outrage among Muslims all over the world and even resulted in the death of the US Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens.
But the Pangasinan Integrated Muslim Assembly Inc. vowed they will never resort to violence and would rather register their protest against the film in a peaceful way.
Mangontawar “Millan†Sultan, secretary general of the Pangasinan Integrated Muslim Assembly Inc., said they organized the rally to make a call to non-Muslims not to believe in everything that was shown in the movie posted on YouTube.
He stressed that the information provided in the movie about Muhammad and the Islam were not true and were just fabricated.
“Hindi gawain ng propeta ang pagpatay ng tao. Sa katunayan, si Muhammad ang nagbigay liwanag sa mga Muslim. Ang pelikula ay pambabastos sa relihiyon ng Islam sa kabuuan (A prophet does not kill people. In fact, Muhammad shed light on Muslims. The movie is scurrility in Islamic religion as a whole)", Sultan added.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ghafoor Ul Haque, an Afghan who is currently residing in Dagupan City, also joined the peace rally and expressed his sentiment along with his Muslim brothers upon seeing the movie.
